Dog Training in Prison
Several of my TPH mentees including our cousin are/ or were dog trainers in the prison system. In our cousin’s case he committed his crimes at age 16 and served 17 years behind bars. So, it was a dramatic life changing event when after a 15-years in prison and in a two-man cell, he suddenly had his first (pet) dog to train and a single cell with the dog. Training service dogs teaches a valuable job skill, benefits society, and brings needed compassion into our mass incarceration system.
